15. A Goal without a Plan is just a Dream

My parents are entrepreneurs so goal setting was a regular family activity in our home. I LOVED setting goals, and still do. But every year was the same. We would set goals in January, and we’re only working on a few if any at all by December. I was even doing the S M A R T goals — “specific,” “measurable,” “attainable,” “relevant,” and “time-bound.” You have to set a goal with a plan.

I read a quote one time that said, “Goals without plans are just dreams.”

I have had a lot of dreams in my life, and in the life of my business. But about two year sago I decided I didn’t just want to set dreams. I wanted to create PLANS.

I learned how to write goals and then MAKE PLANS to make those goals happen.

The first time I set goals this way and I didn’t just hit the target goals, I hit the stretch goals. My STRETCH goal was to have 1000 people in 90 days of marketing and I have nearly 3000 It is not enough to write down “I want to make 100K” without any action plan to make it happen.

Let me tell you exactly how I set goals:

First of all we need to set Goals, and then stretch goals. That way we have a target we must hit, and a target that would be amazing to hit. Goal-setting literally changes your brain. By setting a good, better and best goal you’re training your brain to hit what you thought was the unimaginable.

WRITE DOWN A SPECIFIC REVENUE GOAL

Example Goal: $500/month

Write down a specific REVENUE GOAL. How much do you have to make each month? And then set a better goal, and a stretch goal!

Stretch Goal: 2000

Now that we have our goal, we need to work backwards to get to that goals.

What do you need to make $500 a month?

Say your product is $25. You need 20 orders. Or your service is $100. You need 5 clients.

Great. 20 orders. What do you need to do each week to get 5 orders a week? Or 1 client a week?

  • Facebook ads
  • Blog daily

Brain dump everything you need to do, and then put those “to do” items into your calendar or straight onto your to do list. These are the plans we’re making to meet those goals.

Let’s do this again with a non-monetary goal.

I want to launch the Kylee Ann Commercial Course this fall. I will set goals for how many people I want in the course when it gets closer, but because its not a monetary goal we are not going to plan good, better or best goals at this time.

My goal is to launch KA Commercial Course in September.

What do I need to do to make that happen?

  • Outline Course
  • Price course
  • Create a keynote presentation for each topic
  • Record Behind the Scenes
  • Create the courses in my course builder
  • Create a sales page on my website
  • Create a marketing plan and sales funnel to lead people to the course

Now to take it a step further, I will brain dump each task I said above. Let’s use create a marketing plan as an example.

  • Social Media Posts x 1 time a week leading up to launch week
  • Launch week posts
  • Launch week stories
  • Launch week podcast
  • Launch week lives outline
  • Ad copy
  • Landing page
  • Sales page
  • OTO page

The course is already done since it is launching this month. But when I was creating this course, I would take each of these tasks and assign them to WORK DAYS that are already on my calendar. During the last several months, I would assign one day a week to be my “computer work day” and do 10 to-do items to work towards this goal.

See how easy it is to SET A GOAL WITH A PLAN.

  • Step 1. Set goal
  • Step 2. Set stretch goals (good, better, best)
  • Step 3. List what you need to do to hit each of those goals (i.e. book 5 clients, sell 25 products, etc)
  • Step 4. Brain dump ALL the to-dos for each step
  • Step 5. Schedule the to-dos into your work days

And repeat before every quarter!
