34. Money Mindset

Money money money. Let’s talk about money.

For some reason it’s a hard and uncomfortable topic. For a lot of people, its a source of stress and fear. It can be limiting.

But what if it can also be a tool we can use to solve problems and live abundantly?

“WOMEN CAN’T MAKE MONEY THROUGH THEIR BUSINESS”

Back when my husband and I were building our house, we decided to add on my photography studio last minute. As we were finishing up construction on the studio, I overheard one of the construction workers talking with my husband. I was furious when I heard what he said:

“So how long is it going to take you to finish paying off your wife’s studio?” Excuse me, I not only made the exact amount the studio cost me JUST from 2020 studio sessions, but I also brought in around 3x in monthly income to support my family.

My husband did stand up for me and was quick to say that I am fully capable of paying off my own studio.

But this just shows that not only are we fighting against our OWN beliefs, but society’s beliefs.

MOST OF OUR BELIEFS COME FROM OUR CHILDHOOD

A lot of our beliefs about money are rooted in childhood experiences with how our parents managed their money. How did your parents talk about money? Was money talked about calmly or was their tension and fighting around the matter?

The first key to making money in your business is to shift your mindset from scarcity to abundance. Instead of thinking, “I will never have enough (clients, money, time),” or “I will never be enough,” we have to believe whatever we dream of, we can achieve. Truly believing you have more than you need to reach your goals.

ABUNDANCE VS. SCARCITY

Our minds are always battling two perspectives: abundance or scarcity. Abundance is the goal. Its a positive, grateful and generous state of mind. It comes from a place of GRATITUDE whereas scarcity, or lack, comes from a place of FEAR.

Money Mindset

When you are living in a scarcity mindset, you are making yourself the victim. Victim to life’s circumstances. Victim to our lack of money. Victim to our current situation.

You lose your power. Instead, you want to be the victor and believe that life is happening FOR us, not to us.

When we overcome that victim mentality, we can live life we love NO MATTER what happens around us. Whether that be COVID-19, divorce or health problems.

Avoid the negative, victim self-talk:

  • “I’ll never be able to afford that.”
  • “I am not _______ enough.”
  • “I don’t have enough ________.”

Instead, focus on positive affirmations:

  • “I always have what I need. God takes care of me.”
  • “Money is easy to make and fun to have.”
  • I love my work and I am paid well for it.”
  • God is directing my every step. I trust him fully.”
